Chipped and Broken Teeth

Teeth are remarkably strong, in fact the enamel is the hardest part of the human body. However, due to causes such as cavities, trauma and biting down on something hard they can chip, break or fracture.

When a small part of tooth chips it may not hurt, however it may feel sharp and uncomfortable. When a large piece of tooth breaks it usually results in pain, if the nerve inside the tooth becomes exposed this may cause nerve damage and extreme discomfort especially when exposed to hot, cold and air.

Each type of tooth chip or break requires a different treatment, minor chips may only require a small filling to prevent further damage, or it may not need any treatment only a small polish if the area feels rough.

Major breaks may require a filling, crown or onlay. If the break or fracture exposes the nerve a root canal treatment may be required. In cases where the nerve is infected, and a root canal treatment won’t be sufficient option, the tooth will need to be removed.
