Tooth Development

Majority of babies will start teething around 6 months old. However, the timing can differ between children. People generally have 20 primary teeth which erupt by the age of 3. Primary teeth shed during various stages of childhood. By adulthood (age 21) all 32 permanent teeth generally have erupted.

Tooth Development stages of Primary Teeth:
• 6- 10 months old: bottom front teeth (central incisors) erupt
• 8- 13 months old: top front teeth (central incisors) erupt
• 8- 16 months old: top and bottom teeth (lateral incisors) erupt
• 13- 19 months old: first set of back teeth (molars) erupt
• 16- 23 months old: eye teeth (canines) erupt
• 25- 33 months old: second set of back teeth (molars) erupt

Tooth Development stages of Permanent Teeth:
• 6- 7 years old: first permanent molars erupt
• 6- 8 years old: central incisors erupt
• 7- 8 years old: lateral incisors erupt
• 9- 13 years old: canine teeth erupt
• 9- 13 years old: premolars erupt
• 11-13 years old: second permanent molars erupt
• 18- 21 years old: third permanent molars (wisdom teeth) erupt
