An Orthopantomogram commonly known as an OPG is a type of dental x-ray that produces a two-dimensional image of the entire mouth. It shows the position and growth of all the teeth, the upper and lower jaws, the temporomandibular (TMJ) joints, the nasal area and sinuses. Unlike a traditional intraoral x-ray where the x-ray film is placed inside the mouth, the film for an OPG is contained inside of the machine and a flat electronic sensor is placed inside the mouth. It does expose part of the body to a small dose of radiation, however it is completely safe. It is different from small intraoral x-rays as it shows teeth in less detail, but a much broader view. A panoramic dental x-ray is a non-invasive method to check and monitor wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, dislocation of teeth, the development of a child’s jaw and teeth, infection, tumors and sinuses.
